# ERE explained

What an ERE is, why fuel suppliers pay for it and how you take part as an EV driver.

10 questions

## What does ERE mean for EV charging?

ERE stands for emission reduction unit, the payment EV drivers can earn for verifiable home-charging data. Since 2026 private individuals can have that data registered with the Dutch Emissions Authority through a provider (inboekdienstverlener), who then sells the EREs to parties with a CO₂ reduction obligation. What it earns depends on your charging volume and the current ERE price.

## What does the abbreviation ERE stand for?

The letters ERE stand for emission reduction unit: the unit used to express CO₂ savings in transport. One ERE equals 1 kilogram of avoided CO₂ emissions, as defined under the Energy for Transport Regulation. For home charging that count is calculated using a statutory conversion factor per kWh of grid electricity, not on a one-to-one basis: your charging volume and the CO₂ it avoids together determine how many EREs a session produces.

## Since when can private individuals receive ERE for home charging?

Private individuals have been able to receive ERE for home charging since 2026, after the scheme, previously open only to business and large-scale parties, was extended to consumers. To take part you need a charge point with an integrated MID-certified meter, verifiable charging data, and ownership of or authorisation for the grid connection. Use the charger check to see whether your situation qualifies.

## Why does the ERE payment exist?

The ERE payment exists because fuel suppliers have a statutory obligation to cut CO₂ emissions from transport, and verifiable data on sustainable charging helps them meet it. By having their home-charging data registered, EV drivers contribute to that reduction and get paid by the parties that buy EREs to fulfil their obligation. That, in turn, makes home charging financially more attractive.

## Is ERE the same as the former HBE payment?

No, ERE is not the same: the ERE scheme replaced the former HBE payment (renewable fuel units) from 2026. Both rewarded verifiable CO₂ reduction in transport, but the name, system and regulations have changed, and the new setup explicitly allows private individuals to earn ERE for verifiable home-charging data. If you previously dealt with HBE, ERE is its successor, not an addition to it.

## What is one ERE worth?

One ERE was worth roughly €0.46 on 18 October 2026. That is the median of named sources: the S&P Global Platts benchmark, prices providers actually realised, and indications from NEa-registered providers, which range from €0.36 to €0.51. The price forms through supply and demand rather than being set by the NEa, so it can rise or fall.

## Does one ERE equal one kWh of charging?

No, one ERE does not equal one kWh of charging. The statutory conversion factor is 0.33269 ERE per kWh of grid electricity, which works out to roughly one ERE per 3 kWh you charge at home. At a price of €0.46 per ERE that comes to about €0.15 gross per kWh, before your provider’s commission is deducted.

## Who buys and sells EREs?

EREs are mainly bought by fuel suppliers and other parties with a statutory CO₂ reduction obligation, who use the units to meet that obligation. They are sold on behalf of private individuals and businesses that charge at home or for work, through a provider that registers the charging data with the NEa and sells the EREs on the market. You receive the net share after commission.

## What is the Register Energie voor Vervoer (REV)?

The Register Energie voor Vervoer (REV) is the Dutch Emissions Authority’s system in which providers register verifiable charging data and convert it into EREs. Only parties holding a REV account may carry out that registration; your charging data enters it through the provider you choose. The register ensures every ERE can be traced back to a real, checked charging session.

## What role does the Dutch Emissions Authority play in ERE?

The Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) runs the Register Energie voor Vervoer and oversees the system behind EREs, but does not set the price; that forms through supply and demand. The current list of inboekdienstverleners, self-reported by providers, is not an approval or quality mark. From October 2026 the NEa replaces that list with a register of actual REV account holders.
