ERE stands for emission reduction unit, the payment EV drivers can earn for verifiable home-charging data. Since 2026 private individuals can have that data registered with the Dutch Emissions Authority through a provider (inboekdienstverlener), who then sells the EREs to parties with a CO₂ reduction obligation. What it earns depends on your charging volume and the current ERE price. As a private individual you generally qualify if your charge point has an integrated MID-certified meter, delivers verifiable data per charging session, and you own or are authorised for the grid connection. The charge point must also be located in the Netherlands. If you meet these points you can sign up through a provider; use the charger check for an indication of your situation. A MID-certified meter is an electricity meter that complies with the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) and therefore measures demonstrably accurately and reliably. For ERE this meter must be built into the charge point itself, not a separate unit in the meter cupboard. Only then does it produce the verifiable kWh data a provider needs to register your charging sessions with the NEa. An ERE provider needs verifiable per-session charging data: the date, time and number of kWh charged, taken directly from the charge point’s integrated MID meter. A single total consumption figure without the underlying sessions is usually not enough. The provider explains how to export this data or have it linked automatically from your charging app or back office. That depends on how many kWh you charge at home, the current ERE price and your provider’s commission or fee. At the 4,000 kWh reference volume and a price of roughly €0.10 per kWh gross, that already adds up to a few hundred euros a year before commission. A registration service provider (inboekdienstverlener) registers your verifiable home-charging data with the NEa, converts it into EREs, sells them on the market and pays you the agreed share of the proceeds. Private individuals cannot arrange this with the NEa themselves; the provider holds its own NEa registration for that purpose. Providers differ in commission, payout frequency and contract terms, so it pays to compare them before you sign up. A provider that serves HOAs registers the charge points and can handle administration per point or per hub. First check the charge point’s internet connection and whether the manufacturer’s app or backend still shows readings. If the problem continues, contact your ERE provider and the charge point supplier; without continuous data no ERE can be registered for that period. Under the European AFIR regulation (Art. 5(1)) every publicly accessible charger must offer ad hoc charging: without registering, without a contract and without a subscription. According to the European Commission, an app that requires an account does not count as ad hoc, and cash-only does not either. In the Netherlands the rule was already in the Decree on alternative fuels infrastructure (Art. 4). Free charging points are exempt. For power you export you only get a feed-in fee, and most suppliers also charge feed-in costs per kWh. Until 1 January 2030 the law requires that fee to be at least 50% of the bare supply price. On the fixed contracts the Consumentenbond compared on 23 September 2026, you kept 0.25 to 4.1 cents per kWh after costs. Solar power you use yourself saves you the full price including taxes. With V2L (vehicle-to-load) your car powers a device, through a socket in the car or an adapter in the charge port, usually up to about 3.6 kW. With V2H (vehicle-to-home) your car powers your own home, through a bidirectional charger. With V2G (vehicle-to-grid) your car feeds power back to the grid, steered by your energy supplier, who pays you for it.
