How it works

# How does ERE work for home charging?

You charge electrically, a provider registers your charging data with the NEa, and you receive a payment. We explain each step.

ERE stands for emission-reduction units. EV drivers can receive a payment for verifiable charging data from their charge point. Below we explain exactly how that works - from charging to payout.

## In three steps

01

### You charge electrically

You charge at home with a suitable charge point. You don’t need to do anything extra; normal charging is enough.

02

### A provider registers the data

The ERE provider checks your charging sessions and files them with the Netherlands Emissions Authority (NEa).

03

### You receive the payment

After processing, the provider pays out the amount, minus a commission. Figures are an indication, not a guarantee.

## Do I qualify?

For private individuals, three conditions usually apply. Not sure whether your charge point qualifies? Do the free charger check.

[Do the charger check →](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/charger-check/)

- Integrated MID meter in the charge point
- Verifiable charging data
- Private or business charge point

## What does it earn?

The amount depends on your annual charging volume, the current market price and your provider’s terms. Calculate an indication - no registration needed.

## What to look at when choosing

Don’t look only at the lowest commission. Also compare:

- Payout frequency - quarterly, annually or only after the EREs are sold
- Contract term and notice period - often per calendar year; watch for lock-in
- Transparency about corrections and the realised price
- Whether your charger brand and data are technically accepted

## Frequently asked questions

What is an ERE payment?

An ERE payment is your share of the proceeds from emission reduction units (EREs). A registration provider reports the electricity you charge into your car at home to the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) and receives EREs for it. Fuel suppliers buy those EREs to meet their legal annual obligation for renewable energy in transport. You get a share of the proceeds, minus the provider’s commission.

Which charge point do I need?

For private individuals a charge point with an integrated MID-certified meter is generally required, plus verifiable charging data and ownership of the grid connection. Use the charger check to see whether your situation qualifies.

How do I compare providers?

We compare estimated net earnings, commission, payout frequency, contract term and conditions across every relevant ERE provider, based on public sources with a stated check date.

When do I get paid?

That varies by provider: some pay quarterly, others annually or only after the EREs are sold. The payout frequency is shown per provider in the comparison.
