# What is ERE and how does the home-charging payment work?

ERE stands for emission-reduction units. EV drivers can receive a payment for verifiable charging data. We explain who qualifies and how it works.

In short

- ERE means emission reduction unit: 1 ERE stands for 1 kg of CO₂ emissions avoided in road transport. Fuel suppliers must buy ERE units; the electricity you charge at home earns them.
- What does it pay? In 2026, 1 kWh charged at home earns 0.33269 ERE. At the ERE price of 2 November 2026 (€0.31 per ERE) that is about €0.10 per kWh, before your provider’s costs.
- An ERE provider registers your sessions with the NEa, withholds a commission and pays you the rest; private individuals cannot register themselves.
- Private individuals usually qualify with an integrated MID-certified meter in the charger, ownership of the grid connection and verifiable charging data in kWh.
- Your earnings depend on charging volume, market price and terms, so compare payout frequency, contract term and transparency about corrections as well as commission.

More and more EV drivers can receive a payment for home charging through the Energy for Transport scheme. This article explains what ERE is, how it works and what to look out for.

## ERE in short

**ERE means emission reduction unit.** One ERE stands for 1 kg of CO₂ emissions avoided in Dutch road transport. ERE stands for emission-reduction units (Emissiereductie-eenheden). It is a system in which verifiable charging data from your charge point is registered with the Netherlands Emissions Authority (NEa). Fuel suppliers are legally obliged to reduce the emissions of their fuels and can buy EREs to do so. Part of that value reaches you as a payment.

Since 1 January 2026, ERE replaces the earlier [HBE system](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/hbe-versus-ere-2026/). Private individuals cannot register with the NEa themselves and always go through a registered service provider - an ERE provider.

## Key terms

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| ERE | Emission-reduction unit; a tradable certificate for renewable energy delivered to transport. |
| Service provider | The [ERE provider](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/nea-rev-inboekdienstverlener-rollen/) that checks your charging data and files it with the NEa. |
| MID meter | Certified meter that reliably measures and records the electricity charged. |

## Who qualifies?

For private individuals, three conditions usually apply:

- An **[integrated MID-certified meter](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/which-chargers-have-a-mid-meter/)** inside the charge point.
- **Ownership of the grid connection** at the address.
- **Verifiable charging data** that can be read out in kWh.

Not sure whether your charge point qualifies? Do the charger check for a quick indication. One NEa page still says no to home chargers, while the leaflet of 2 February 2026 lets private individuals take part through a registration provider. Those two texts sit side by side under [NEa, REV and registration provider](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/nea-rev-inboekdienstverlener-rollen/#can-you-take-part-as-a-private-individual-if-an-nea-page-says-no). Which EAN code belongs on the mandate is in [Why you need your EAN code](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/ean-code-voor-ere/).

## How does the payment arise?

An ERE provider registers the ERE-eligible charging sessions, handles the administrative process with the NEa, withholds a commission and pays the remaining amount to you. How much you receive depends on your annual charging volume, the [current market price](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/ere-prijs-factoren/) and your provider’s terms. Amounts are always an indication, not a guarantee.

## What to look at when choosing

Don’t look only at the [lowest commission](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/ere-vaste-vergoeding-versus-commissie/). Also compare the payout frequency, the contract term, transparency about corrections and whether your charging data is technically accepted. Our comparison shows these points per provider side by side.
