# Heads up: from 2027, external MID meters stop counting for businesses too

Since January 2026 private individuals need the MID meter inside the charge point. Only businesses with an external one from before 2026 have until 2027.

Regulation MID meter

In short

- From 1 January 2027, an external MID meter no longer counts for businesses that booked with one before 2026, so plan replacement beforehand.
- For private individuals nothing changes in 2027: an integrated MID meter has been required since 1 January 2026, with no transition year.
- A meter on the grid connection, such as your smart meter, or any other meter outside the charge point does not count.
- Without an integrated MID meter, a private individual only qualifies via an exclusive allocation point behind which only the charge point draws power.

Since January 2026, only a MID meter integrated in the charge point counts for ERE. There is no transition year for private individuals: an external MID meter has never counted for them. Only businesses that were already booking with an external MID meter before 2026 get a transition year. It ends on 1 January 2027.

## What’s changing?

The amended Besluit energie vervoer (Staatsblad 2026, 117) defines a charge point’s meter as a meter inside the charge point itself. The meter on the grid connection - such as your smart meter - or any other meter outside the charge point therefore does not count. The decree entered into force on 20 June 2026, with retroactive effect to 1 January 2026.

For businesses that were already booking with an external MID meter before 2026, the NEa does not enforce this in 2026, so they can install an integrated meter. From 1 January 2027, a MID meter *outside* the charge point no longer counts for them either.

## Who is this relevant for?

Mainly [business charge points](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/ere-zakelijke-laadpunten/) - charging hubs, fleets, older business premises - that were already booking with an external meter before 2026. If your business has such a charge point and wants to keep ERE income, factor in replacement before 1 January 2027.

Charging at home as a private individual? Then nothing changes in 2027: the integrated MID meter has been required for you since January 2026. Without an integrated MID meter you only qualify if the grid operator has set up an [exclusive allocation point](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/knowledge-base/ere-zonder-mid-meter-uitzondering/) behind which only the charge point draws power.

## What can you do now?

- Look up in the overview [which chargers have a MID meter](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/which-chargers-have-a-mid-meter/) whether your model has one, or do the [charger check](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/charger-check/).
- Is your business still booking with an external meter? Plan the replacement in good time, before 1 January 2027.
- Compare providers so you’re ready as soon as your charge point qualifies.
