Electricity price

## The Dutch electricity price per month, since 2019

The price on the Dutch day-ahead market, which dynamic contracts follow every hour (every quarter hour since October 2025). It peaked in August 2022 at €0.447 per kWh. Since 2023, April 2024 was the cheapest month at €0.058.

Smart charging

## When you charge matters more than ever

Over the last 12 months power in the four cheapest hours of the day cost an average of €0.043 per kWh on the market, and €0.146 between 6 and 10 pm. With VAT that is a difference of €0.12 per kWh: for an electric car charging 2,700 kWh a year at home about €337 a year, with a dynamic contract and a charger or car that picks the cheap hours itself.

Negative prices

## How often power cost less than nothing

In 2026 the power price has been negative for 396 hours so far, against 581 hours in all of 2025. It mostly happens on sunny afternoons, when there is more solar power than the grid can absorb. With a dynamic contract you are paid on the market price in those hours; after net metering ends in 2027, charging your car in those hours matters even more.

Suppliers

## How many companies may supply electricity

Supplying electricity to households requires an ACM license. The number of license holders peaked at 62 in September 2021; since 2021, 20 have been revoked, many during the energy crisis. There are 52 now. There are more brands, because many supply under another company’s license.

## Quick answers

What was the average Dutch electricity price in September 2026?

On the Dutch day-ahead market an average of €0.152 per kWh (€152.21 per MWh), excluding VAT and energy tax. With energy tax and VAT a kWh came to about €0.295, plus your supplier’s markup. Source: Energy-Charts (Fraunhofer ISE), data Bundesnetzagentur | SMARD.de.

How often was the Dutch power price negative in 2026?

396 hours up to October 22, 2026, against 581 hours in all of 2025. Negative prices mostly occur on sunny, windy afternoons in spring and summer, when there is more power than needed.

How much does smart charging an electric car save?

Over the last 12 months the market price in the 4 cheapest hours of each day averaged €0.043 per kWh, against €0.146 between 6 and 10 pm. Including VAT that is €0.12 per kWh; for 2,700 kWh a year about €337. You only get this with a dynamic contract and if the car is plugged in during those hours.

How many energy suppliers are there in the Netherlands?

52 companies hold an ACM license to supply electricity to households and small businesses (register of October 19, 2026). Since 2019 the highest number was 62 (September 2021); since 2021, 20 licenses have been revoked. Many brands supply under another company’s license.

How many public charge points are there in the Netherlands?

227,773 on July 31, 2026 according to RVO: 138,311 public and 82,252 semi-public charge points under 50 kW, and 7,210 fast charge points. A year earlier there were 204,520.
