# What changes on 1 January 2027 for EV drivers

A checklist for anyone who drives electric in the Netherlands. For each change: what changes, from when, who it affects, what to do now, and the source with the date it was checked.

[By the ERE Team](https://erevergelijken.eu/en/about/) · Checklist assembled on October 18, 2026

Short answer

You can only switch on 1 January: one booking provider per EAN per calendar year. In the table of 42 providers, the most common dated deadline is November 30, 2026 (8 providers).

Net metering ends. Solar power you charge into the car yourself saves the full kWh price. Buying green power does not count for the 100% ERE route.

For private individuals the MID meter has been inside the charger since 1 January 2026. On 1 January 2027 only the transition year for businesses with an external meter ends.

Motor vehicle tax for an electric passenger car stays at 70% of the petrol rate. BPM in the statute is €687. The 2027 tax plan is not final yet.

ERE provider

## You can only switch on 1 January

One booking provider per EAN per calendar year. Your contract decides by when you must cancel.

What changes

You can only switch on 1 January: one booking provider per EAN per calendar year (Regeling energie vervoer, article 9(8)). A mandate covers whole calendar years. The 2027 mandate lets the new provider book from 1 January. It does not move 2026 kWh. In our table of 42 providers, checked on October 11, 2026, the dated deadlines are: 2 on November 19, 2026 (all calculated from the notice period); 8 on November 30, 2026 (3 in the terms, 5 calculated); 2 on December 1, 2026 (all calculated from the notice period); 5 on December 31, 2026 (in the terms). For 19 providers the public terms state no date. For 4 no separate cancellation is needed. For 2 the terms do not allow a switch on 1 January 2027. A date labelled as calculated is our sum from the notice period, not a date the provider prints.

From

The switch itself is 1 January 2027. The cancellation date is in your contract and differs per provider.

Who it affects

Anyone who has ERE booked at home or at work and wants to change provider. If you stay with the same provider, this rule does not ask you to do anything.

### What to do now

- Look up your provider in the cancellation table and read your own contract next to it.
- Treat a calculated date as a calculation. The provider’s terms come first.
- Cancel in writing the way the terms name, and keep the confirmation.
- Sign the new mandate for 2027 only. The 2026 kWh stay with the 2026 provider.

Charger

## 1 January 2027 only ends the transition year for businesses

For private individuals the MID meter has been inside the charger since 1 January 2026. Nothing about that changes on 1 January 2027.

What changes

For home charging as a private individual, the MID meter has had to sit inside the charger itself since 1 January 2026. There is no transition year. A loose MID meter in the meter cupboard, or only a smart meter, does not count. The only exception is a separate exclusive allocation point of the grid operator. Businesses that were already booking before 2026 with an external MID meter have a transition year: the NEa does not enforce against that in 2026. From 2027 those businesses too must have an integrated MID meter, or an exclusive (secondary) allocation point. An external meter no longer counts for them either.

From

Private: 1 January 2026, and that stays. A business with an external meter from before 2026: the transition year ends on 1 January 2027.

Who it affects

Private individuals who want ERE for home charging, and businesses that were already booking before 2026 with a meter outside the charger. A business that only started in 2026 was already outside that transition year.

### What to do now

- Check that the MID meter is inside the charger, not only in the meter cupboard.
- The grid operator’s smart meter is not a MID meter for ERE.
- If you still book as a business with an external meter, arrange an integrated meter or an exclusive allocation point before 1 January 2027.

Solar power

## Net metering ends on 1 January 2027

Power you charge into the car yourself saves the full kWh price. Export only earns a fee. Your ERE per kWh does not change because of that.

What changes

On 1 January 2027 net metering ends, whichever energy contract you have. You can then no longer offset exported solar power against your use. Until 1 January 2030 the feed-in payment is at least 50% of the agreed supply price. The ACM explains that as the bare supply rate, without energy tax and VAT. Feed-in costs can bring the net payment below that minimum. Solar power you use yourself saves the full kWh price: you pay no energy tax and no supplier costs on it. For a 1-year fixed contract, rates of September 23, 2026, checked on October 6, 2026, the net payment (fee minus feed-in costs) at 13 suppliers runs from 0.25 to 4.1 cents per kWh. The median is 0.27 cents. Clean Energy, Mega Energie, Powerpeers and UnitedConsumers have not yet published the 2027 amount. These are not prices we fix for 2027: the 2027 tariffs are not set.

From

1 January 2027. The 50% minimum payment runs until 1 January 2030.

Who it affects

Households with solar panels, including when you charge an electric car. Without panels this law does not change your charging bill.

### What to do now

- Charge the car while the sun shines. Those kWh you save at the full price. Exported kWh only earn the fee, minus the feed-in costs.
- Do not expect a higher ERE per kWh because you charge on solar. On the ordinary route the national share counts, not the hour of the day.
- Buying green power, even on a 100% green contract, does not count for the 100% route. That route is only your own generation at the same WOZ object, or a direct line.
- Ask your ERE provider whether it supports the 100% route before you count on it. We do not give legal advice on that.

Belastingdienst

## Road tax, BPM and company-car addition

Only amounts that are in the statute or at the Belastingdienst. The 2027 tax plan is not yet law.

What changes

The Belastingdienst publishes the euro amounts of motor vehicle tax for 2027 in December. Below is what the statute already says, and what is not a scheme yet.

From

1 January 2027, except where a point names another date.

Who it affects

Owners of an electric passenger car, employees with a company car, and entrepreneurs with an electric van.

### Road tax stays at 70%

Unchanged

For a fully electric passenger car you pay 70% of the rate for a comparable petrol car in 2026, 2027 and 2028, 75% in 2029, and the full rate from 2030. The Belastingdienst publishes the 2027 amounts in December. Since 1 July 2026 the ready-to-drive mass counts, 100 kilos more, at the same amount. An electric van pays the full rate. The temporary reduction of the entrepreneur rate for vans runs until 1 January 2027. This page states no euro amount for that reduction: the source names the end, not the amount.

### BPM in the statute: €687

Not final yet

In the statute as of 1 January 2027, BPM for a new passenger car with 0 grams of CO2 per kilometre is €687, the same fixed amount as in 2026. An electric van with 0 grams pays no BPM. The 2027 tax plan is not yet law and can still change the amount. The vote is expected in December 2026. Not final yet.

### Company-car addition 20% up to €30,000

Law

For an electric car first registered in 2027 the company-car addition is 20% up to €30,000 catalogue value and 22% above that. The statute writes this as a 2% discount, capped at €600 (Wage Tax Act 1964, art. 13bis, 2027 text). From 2028 that discount ends. The rate of your current car stays for 60 months from first registration.

### 12% levy on a fossil company car

Law

From 1 January 2027 an employer pays a final levy of 12% of the catalogue value for a passenger car with CO2 emissions that an employee also uses privately. Cars already provided before 2027 are outside it until 17 September 2030. A fully electric car is outside it. The 2027 tax plan proposes exceptions, such as replacement transport in the first 14 days. Those exceptions are not yet law.

### Trade-in subsidy for a used electric car

Not final yet

In an implementation review (House of Representatives, 2026D45010) RVO describes a subsidy for a used electric car with an original catalogue price of €12,000 to €60,000. The opening is given there as the fourth quarter of 2026 or the second quarter of 2027. According to the letter to Parliament of 21 September 2026, as reported by Taxence, the proposed amounts are €6,000 or €4,000, depending on income. It is not a scheme yet. SEPP, the national purchase subsidy, is closed. Not final yet.

### What to do now

- For 2027 and 2028, count on 70% of the rate for a comparable petrol car. The euro amount comes in December.
- An electric company car first registered in 2027 gets 20% addition up to €30,000. Your current rate stays for 60 months.
- The trade-in subsidy for a used electric car is not a scheme yet. Wait for the official opening.

Energy

## You do not have to change contract because net metering ends

Fixed, variable or dynamic: the law ends net metering for all three. We do not recommend a supplier or a contract type.

What changes

On September 27, 2026, of 71 household brands, 32 publish a fixed contract, 34 a variable one and 59 a dynamic one. The counts overlap. For 10, 8 and 4 brands that type is missing. A fixed contract locks the agreed supply price for the term. A variable contract can change during the term. A dynamic contract follows the hour or the quarter hour, plus the supplier’s markup. 6 household brands have an open ERE deal. 2 are on a waitlist or pre-registration; those are not counted here as an open deal. The payout can be tied to that energy contract. Independent providers book the same kWh without an energy contract. The NEa checks the connection in the connections register, not in the energy contract.

From

Net metering ends on 1 January 2027, even if your contract is still running then. The notice period is at most 1 month.

Who it affects

Households with an energy contract, especially with solar panels or an electric car. Without panels, the end of net metering does not change your supply price.

### What to do now

- Stay or switch: that is a separate choice. The law ends net metering either way.
- A cancellation fee applies only to a fixed-term contract that is still running, and only when both are in the contract. Variable and dynamic contracts do not have that fee.
- In a new offer, look at the feed-in payment and the feed-in costs, not at a ranking. We do not make one.

Statute

## Energy tax in the statute for 2027

The 2027 tax plan can still change the rate in the text as of 1 January 2027.

What changes

In the statute as of 1 January 2027 energy tax is €0.08579 per kWh for 0 to 10,000 kWh, excluding VAT. In 2026 it is €0.09161 per kWh, excluding VAT, for the same band. The 2027 tax plan is not yet law and can still change the 2027 rate. Not final yet. This page does not state an amount for the 2027 tax reduction: the sources we use for this page do not give that as a set rate.

From

1 January 2027, if the statute stays as it is.

Who it affects

Everyone who takes electricity from the grid, including home charging. The band here is 0 to 10,000 kWh.

### What to do now

- Do not use €0.08579 as a fixed budget. The 2027 tax plan can still change it.

ACM

## 2027 network tariffs: proposals, not a decision yet

The ACM is assessing the proposals and takes a decision in November 2026. Not final yet.

What changes

The ACM has published the grid operators’ 2027 tariff proposals and writes that it will take a decision on them in November 2026. Households and businesses with a connection on the regional grids are expected to pay on average 20% more next year for the transport of electricity and gas. For an average household the ACM names an increase of about €89 a year for electricity and €52 a year for gas transport. That 20% covers electricity and gas together. The €89 is not the extra amount for a household with an electric car, and it is not a set tariff per grid operator.

From

The proposals are for 2027. The decision is announced for November 2026. Not final yet.

Who it affects

Households and businesses on the regional grids. That also touches home charging, but the ACM names an average household, not electric driving on its own.

### What to do now

- Wait for the November 2026 decision before you lock an annual cost figure.
- Use your own grid operator’s tariff only once the ACM has set it.

AFIR

## Fast chargers on the TEN-T network: card reader or contactless required from 2027 (AFIR Art. 5(1))

Only charging points of 50 kW or more along TEN-T or in a safe and secure parking area.

What changes

From 1 January 2027, all publicly accessible charging points of 50 kW or more along the TEN-T road network or in a safe and secure parking area must have a payment card reader or contactless reader (option a or b), including points deployed before 13 April 2024. A QR code alone is then no longer sufficient for these points. This retrofit duty does not apply to existing points outside the TEN-T network or to points below 50 kW.

From

January 1, 2027

Who it affects

Anyone who uses a public fast charger of 50 kW or more along the TEN-T road network or in a safe and secure parking area. Existing points outside that network, and points below 50 kW, are outside this retrofit duty.

### What to do now

- From 1 January 2027, expect to pay at those fast chargers with a payment card or contactless. A QR code alone is then no longer enough there.

NEa

## No new regulation on 1 January 2027, and no factor yet

The NEa page states 50.5% for 2026. It does not state a percentage for 2027.

What changes

For deliveries from the electricity grid the NEa uses the Dutch share of renewable electricity from two years before the delivery year, set by CBS. On the page Booking electricity, read on October 18, 2026, it says: for 2026 this is 50.5%. That page does not state a figure for 2027. 100% applies only to generation at the delivery site within the same WOZ object, or to a direct line. That needs guarantees of origin for non-grid delivery, no operating subsidy may have been paid out, and the source is solar or wind. Biomass and biogas do not count. Buying green power does not count for that route. The legislative information for the Regeling energie vervoer, consulted on October 18, 2026, says the text is in force from June 20, 2026 until now. That page does not name a version that enters into force on 1 January 2027.

From

Compliance year 2027 uses the CBS figure from two years earlier. The NEa has not published that percentage on the page we read.

Who it affects

Anyone who has ERE booked for power charged from the grid. The change from HBE to ERE was on 1 January 2026, not in 2027.

### What to do now

- Do not calculate with a percentage you choose yourself for 2027. Until the NEa publishes it, 50.5% is the last figure named, and that is for 2026.
- Ask your provider about the 100% route. Green power from the grid is not part of it.

Questions

## Frequently asked questions

Can I still switch ERE provider during 2026?

No. You can only switch on 1 January: one booking provider per EAN per calendar year (Regeling energie vervoer, article 9(8)). In the table of 42 providers, checked on October 11, 2026, the dated deadlines are: 2 on November 19, 2026 (all calculated from the notice period); 8 on November 30, 2026 (3 in the terms, 5 calculated); 2 on December 1, 2026 (all calculated from the notice period); 5 on December 31, 2026 (in the terms). For 19 providers the public terms state no date. For 4 no separate cancellation is needed. For 2 the terms do not allow a switch on 1 January 2027. A calculated date is our sum from the notice period. The 2026 kWh stay with the 2026 provider.

Do I need a new MID meter as a private individual on 1 January 2027?

No. For home charging as a private individual the MID meter has had to sit inside the charger since 1 January 2026, with no transition year. A loose meter in the meter cupboard, or only a smart meter, does not count. The only exception is a separate exclusive allocation point of the grid operator. On 1 January 2027 only the transition year ends for businesses that were already booking before 2026 with an external MID meter. From then they too need an integrated meter, or an exclusive (secondary) allocation point.

Does charging on solar power earn more ERE?

Not on the ordinary route. For power from the grid the NEa uses the national share of renewable electricity. On the page, read on 18 October 2026, that is 50.5% for 2026. It does not state a percentage for 2027. 100% applies only to your own generation at the same WOZ object or a direct line, with guarantees of origin for non-grid delivery, no operating subsidy paid out, and solar or wind only. Buying green power does not count for that. You do save the full kWh price when you charge the car while the sun shines, because net metering ends on 1 January 2027.

How much road tax do I pay in 2027 for an electric car?

For a fully electric passenger car, 70% of the rate for a comparable petrol car, as in 2026 and 2028. The Belastingdienst publishes the euro amounts in December. In the statute, BPM is €687 at 0 grams of CO2 per kilometre. The 2027 tax plan is not yet law and can still change that. The company-car addition for a car first registered in 2027 is 20% up to €30,000 and 22% above that.

Do I have to change my energy contract before 1 January 2027?

No, not because net metering ends. The law applies whichever contract you have. You pay a cancellation fee only for a fixed-term contract that is still running, and only when that is in the contract. Variable and dynamic contracts do not have that fee. The notice period is at most 1 month. We do not recommend a supplier or a contract type.

Is the 2027 ERE factor known, and do network tariffs rise by 20%?

The NEa page states 50.5% for 2026 and no percentage for 2027. The Regeling energie vervoer, consulted on October 18, 2026, has no version that enters into force on 1 January 2027. The 20% is an ACM expectation attached to tariff proposals, for the transport of electricity and gas together, for households and businesses on the regional grids. For an average household the ACM names about €89 a year more for electricity and €52 for gas transport. The decision follows in November 2026. Not final yet, and it is not an amount for electric driving on its own.
