Home battery

Home battery after 2027: when does it pay?

Net metering ends on 1 January 2027. Solar power you export then earns 0.25 to 4.1 cents per kWh on fixed contracts. A home battery lets you use more of it yourself, but every independent study reaches the same conclusion: on self-use alone it rarely pays back within its lifetime. Work it out for your home and compare 34 batteries.

Will a home battery pay back for you?

Enter your production and use. We use what you pay per kWh on average now (25.9 cents all in) and what exporting still earns net in 2027 (median 0.27 cents).

Around the end of its lifetime

Do you drive an electric car?

Charge it in daytime on your own solar power. According to Milieu Centraal that has about the same effect as a home battery. With your production that is around 700 kWh a year, worth € 180 a year, with nothing to buy if your charger can charge smartly.

Your ERE does not change: home charging earns ERE, with or without solar panels.

An estimate based on CE Delft (2023) and the field trial by Vereniging Eigen Huis and CE Delft (2026), with 15% loss in the battery. Not a simulation of your home: a P1 meter shows how much you really use in the evening and at night.

What research says

Five studies, one conclusion

No independent source recommends a home battery to save money right now. Not even the study a battery seller commissioned itself.

Feed-in from 2027

What an exported kWh still earns

A battery is worth the gap between what you pay per kWh and what exporting earns net. On most fixed contracts that gap is almost the whole power price from 2027.

For example: you pay 25.9 cents per kWh on average. If an exported kWh earns 0.27 cents net, every kWh you use yourself instead of exporting saves almost the full 25.9 cents. After about 15% loss in the battery, a little less of that remains.

On a dynamic contract you usually get the market price of that moment for exported power, without separate feed-in costs. On sunny afternoons that price is often low or even negative.

Trading, congestion and network tariffs

Extra income: what is certain and what is not

Uncertain and falling

Trading on the energy market

  • Suppliers such as Frank Energie, Zonneplan and Essent let your battery charge at low and discharge at high prices. Their earnings figures are estimates based on past years.
  • Vereniging Eigen Huis and CE Delft see imbalance trading income falling sharply; after 2027 that makes the payback longer than the lifetime of 10 to 15 years.
  • The cabinet writes that the imbalance market has become less attractive for home batteries.
  • If you charge from the grid and feed back later, after 2027 you pay energy tax you do not get back. The cabinet is studying a solution, expected at the end of 2026.

Payments for relieving the grid

  • In Gelderland, Utrecht and parts of the Flevopolder and Noord-Brabant you can get a payment of up to hundreds of euros a year, according to the cabinet, if your battery relieves the grid at busy moments.
  • Frank Energie states up to € 450 a year for a 20 kWh battery, for four winters on the same terms; the amount is a maximum. Your own use comes first.
  • Essent states about € 250 extra a year with its BuurtBonus, also on a fixed or variable contract.

Network tariffs that vary by time

Today every household pays a fixed amount for the grid. Grid operators want tariffs that depend on when and how much you draw, with the evening as the most expensive time. The ACM expects to decide at the end of 2026; grid operators say it can start from 2029. Earlier research found a saving on network costs of about € 163 a year for a 5 kWh battery. Because it is not decided yet, it is not in the calculator; enter it yourself under extra income if you want to include it.

VAT

21% VAT, reclaimable only with trading

A home battery carries 21% VAT, on both the purchase and the installation. The 0% rate for solar panels does not cover home batteries, not even when they are installed together with panels. You can only reclaim the VAT if you become a VAT entrepreneur by trading electricity with the battery: with an energy management system (EMS), a dynamic contract, payment from your energy company for feed-in and invoices in your own name. You then file quarterly VAT returns, charge 21% VAT on your feed-in compensation, cannot use the small business scheme (KOR) and must correct for private use (spread over 5 years). If you only use the battery privately, you get no VAT back. In June 2026 the Dutch parliament asked for a study into a 0% VAT rate for home batteries. The cabinet's Prinsjesdag 2026 figures put the cost at about €365 million in 2027 and roughly €1.5 billion over five years. We found no decision to introduce it yet (as of 6 October 2026). The cabinet is also studying how to avoid double energy tax on stored electricity, with results expected at the end of 2026. Net metering (salderingsregeling) ends on 1 January 2027.

Safety and rules

Registering, placement and subsidies

Registering is required

You register a home battery at energieleveren.nl, just like solar panels. According to the grid operators this is required by law, up to 1 megawatt. We found no exemption for plug-in batteries.

Enexis, ThuisbatterijStedin, Thuisbatterijen

The Netherlands has no separate legal rules for placing a home battery, only the general rules for electrical installations (Bbl and NEN 1010). In May 2025 the cabinet saw no reason for extra rules yet, and no standard for home batteries exists.Letter on building regulations, 23 May 2025NEN, A standard for home batteries? (June 2025)

Subsidies

  • National

    Rijksoverheid

There is no national subsidy for home batteries. Minister Hermans (KGG) dropped the planned quality mark and subsidy in 2025: there will be no specific stimulus for home batteries in the short term.

No subsidy. The new cabinet does not plan one either.

  • Province

Nadere regels Subsidie Thuisbatterij Provincie Flevoland

25% of eligible costs excl. VAT, up to €1,250; costs must be at least €3,000 excl. VAT. For batteries of 5 to 20 kWh (modular systems count in total). You need solar panels and must feed in; renters can apply with the owner's consent. Plug-in batteries are allowed; a fixed battery must be installed by a certified installer. From April to September the battery may not discharge to the grid between 12:00 and 15:00, and from October to March it may not charge from the grid between 17:00 and 21:00. VAT, meter cupboard and connection work are not eligible.

The 2026 budget is used up: the reopened round of 1 October 2026 filled immediately and no more applications are accepted this year. Another €875,000 is expected from early 2027. Applications run until 1 October 2027, first come, first served; the scheme expires on 31 October 2027.

Driving electric? Your car is the cheaper battery

A car battery is much bigger than a home battery, and it is already in your driveway.

According to Milieu Centraal, charging your car in daytime on your own solar power has about the same effect as a home battery: your self-use goes from about 30% to over 50%. A charger that can charge smartly on solar or low prices is all you need.

Your ERE does not change. Home charging earns ERE at the national share of renewable power, with or without solar panels or a home battery. Power back from your car to your home is not possible in the Netherlands yet.

Questions

Questions about home batteries

Will a home battery pay back after 2027?

On self-use alone, usually not. In the field trial by Vereniging Eigen Huis and CE Delft a € 3,500 battery of 5 kWh had a payback of 10 to 22 years, with a lifetime of 10 to 15 years. Milieu Centraal and the Consumentenbond conclude that the purchase is not profitable for most households right now. The calculator on this page lets you work it out with your own production, use and prices.

How big should my home battery be?

Don’t go too big: the battery should cover your evening and night use, says Milieu Centraal. A P1 meter shows how much that is. The Consumentenbond’s rule of thumb is 1 to 1.5 kWh per kWp of solar panels, or 60 to 80% of your daily use. Above about 5 kWh the gain drops quickly: in the CE Delft study self-use went from 25% to 50% with 5 kWh and to 60% with 10 kWh.

Is there a subsidy, or can I reclaim the VAT?

There is no national subsidy. A few provinces and municipalities have their own scheme; they are listed on this page. A home battery carries 21% VAT, also when bought together with solar panels. According to the Dutch tax authority you can only reclaim it if you trade power with the battery and so become a VAT entrepreneur, with a dynamic contract and quarterly VAT returns.

Is a dynamic contract a better fit for a home battery?

According to the Consumentenbond a dynamic contract is probably more attractive from 2027 for many households with a home battery, provided the battery charges and discharges automatically on the power price. In the Vereniging Eigen Huis field trial the saving on self-use was actually higher on a fixed contract (€ 350 against € 217 a year), because you pay more per kWh there.

Is a plug-in battery safe?

Milieu Centraal does not recommend plug-in batteries yet and points to fire risk: power can then reach one circuit from two sides without the fuse tripping. The fire service advises a separate circuit in the meter cupboard, never an extension cord or power strip, and at most one battery per circuit. A limit of 800 watts per socket is often mentioned, but we found no Dutch rule that sets it.

Where may I put a home battery?

There are no separate legal placement rules, only the general rules for electrical installations (Bbl and NEN 1010). The fire service advises a shed, otherwise the garage or attic, never an escape route, with a smoke alarm in the same room and a certified installer. NIPV advises a separate room and detection of overheating. You do have to register a home battery at energieleveren.nl; that is required by law.

Does a home battery earn ERE?

No, and it does not change your ERE either. ERE is about power you charge into your car, measured by your charger’s MID meter. For home charging the national share of renewable power counts (50.5% in 2026), with or without solar panels or a battery.

Can my electric car work as a home battery?

Not in the Netherlands yet. No manufacturer offers car-to-home power (V2H) here; according to the cabinet the grid code barrier goes in 2029. What does work: charging your car in daytime on your own solar power. According to Milieu Centraal that has about the same effect on your self-use as a home battery.

Does a home battery help the grid?

Mostly yes, if you use it for your own solar power, say Enexis and Milieu Centraal. A battery that trades on the energy market can make local congestion worse: according to Enexis it helps 95% of the time, but can raise the peak 5% of the time.
