More and more EV drivers can receive a payment for home charging through the Energy for Transport scheme. This article explains what ERE is, how it works and what to look out for.

ERE in short

ERE stands for emission-reduction units (Emissiereductie-eenheden). It is a system in which verifiable charging data from your charge point is registered with the Netherlands Emissions Authority (NEa). Fuel suppliers are legally obliged to reduce the emissions of their fuels and can buy EREs to do so. Part of that value reaches you as a payment.

Since 1 January 2026, ERE replaces the earlier HBE system. Private individuals cannot register with the NEa themselves and always go through a registered service provider - an ERE provider.

Key terms

Term Meaning
ERE Emission-reduction unit; a tradable certificate for renewable energy delivered to transport.
Service provider The ERE provider that checks your charging data and files it with the NEa.
MID meter Certified meter that reliably measures and records the electricity charged.

Who qualifies?

For private individuals, three conditions usually apply:

  • An integrated MID-certified meter inside the charge point.
  • Ownership of the grid connection at the address.
  • Verifiable charging data that can be read out in kWh.

Not sure whether your charge point qualifies? Do the charger check for a quick indication.

How does the payment arise?

An ERE provider registers the ERE-eligible charging sessions, handles the administrative process with the NEa, withholds a commission and pays the remaining amount to you. How much you receive depends on your annual charging volume, the current market price and your provider’s terms. Amounts are always an indication, not a guarantee.

What to look at when choosing

Don’t look only at the lowest commission. Also compare the payout frequency, the contract term, transparency about corrections and whether your charging data is technically accepted. Our comparison shows these points per provider side by side.
