Why does the ERE price change, and what factors drive your payment?

The market-wide ERE price stood at around €0.31 per ERE on 7 September 2026, within a €0.21–0.41 band. We explain which factors move the price and what the scenarios do and don’t tell you.

More and more EV drivers want to know what an ERE is actually worth - and whether that figure will be higher or lower in a few years. The short answer: the market-wide price stood at around €0.31 per ERE on 7 September 2026, within a band of €0.21 to €0.41. What happens after that is not an established fact but a scenario, driven by supply, demand, fuel suppliers’ reduction obligations and the statutory renewable-energy share. This article separates what we know from what we can only estimate.

What we actually know right now

The current ERE price is not a fixed tariff set by any single party, but an indication based on public sources. On 7 September 2026 the weighted median of three public sources (erewaarde.nl) stood at roughly €0.31 per ERE, within a band of €0.21 to €0.41. A second NEa-registered provider (gridcredits.nl) quoted a reference price of around €0.46 per ERE in mid-2026.

The fact that the two sources disagree is not a measurement error - it’s how a young, decentralised market behaves. There is no public, dated price history to chart: only this current level is an observation. Every figure further on in this article is an explicitly labelled estimate.

Why do sources disagree?

The Netherlands Emissions Authority (NEa) runs the register and the system behind EREs, but does not set the price. As with any over-the-counter market, the price forms between buyers (fuel suppliers) and sellers (providers and, indirectly, EV drivers), with no central exchange or single quoted rate. Different providers strike deals at different times, in different volumes, with different counterparties - which is why two serious sources can quote €0.31 and €0.46 at the same moment.

Four factors that drive the ERE price

The price doesn’t move at random. Four factors play a structural role:

The third factor deserves a little more explanation, because it’s often confused with the price itself. The share of renewable energy on the Dutch grid (the CBS figure from two years earlier) doesn’t set the euro price, but it does determine how many EREs a kWh of charging produces. For 2026 that share is set at 50.5% (CBS 2024), which results in the statutory factor of 0.33269 ERE per kWh of grid electricity. If the national renewable share keeps rising in coming years, the number of EREs per kWh should, in principle, rise too - independent of what a single ERE is worth.

From euro per ERE to euro per kWh

Because the price is quoted per ERE rather than per kWh, converting it shows what a given price actually means for your charging. The statutory factor from the Energy for Transport Regulation (art. 11) is 0.33269 ERE per kWh - roughly 3 kWh of charging per ERE.

These are gross figures: your provider’s commission or fixed fee is still deducted before you actually get paid.

Scenarios to 2030: direction, not a guarantee

To give a sense of possible developments, we use three scenarios that each start at today’s band and apply an annual growth rate: cautious (starting at €0.21, -3% a year), expected (starting at €0.31, +4% a year) and optimistic (starting at €0.41, +10% a year). Run forward to end-2030, that works out to roughly €0.18 per ERE in the cautious scenario, around €0.37 in the expected scenario and around €0.61 in the optimistic scenario.

These are not predictions. They are arithmetic extensions of assumptions, meant to give direction - not financial advice and not a promise. The actual price depends on the four factors above and may end up higher or lower than any of these scenarios.

What does this mean for your own payment?

The ERE price is only one part of the sum. What you receive net also depends on your annual charging volume and your provider’s terms: providers withhold a commission ranging from 12% to 25%, some work with a fixed annual fee instead of a commission, and a few guarantee a minimum amount per kWh. A rising price therefore feeds through differently at a provider with 15% commission than at one with 25%. In practice: how to keep an eye on the price

Always check the current price and date before you calculate anything. The figures in this article were checked on 7 September 2026 and may since have changed. Follow the public sources (erewaarde.nl, gridcredits.nl), ask your provider for the most recent price they actually realised rather than just the indicative rate, and treat every scenario beyond today as an assumption, not a guarantee.
