Renting solar panels after 2027: what changes?

The end of net metering for people who rent or lease solar panels: who receives the feed-in payment, what the published rental terms say about 2027, and what a buy-out does and does not change.

Short answer: if you rent or lease solar panels, net metering ends on 1 January 2027 on the same date as for an owner. The feed-in payment lands on your energy contract, not with the company that put the panels on the roof. The rental continues under the contract you already have. A buy-out makes you the owner of the installation. It does not move the payment, because that was already on your energy bill. What renting means for your ERE payment is in renting or leasing solar panels. That is not repeated here.

Who receives the feed-in payment if you rent the panels?

Net metering ends on 1 January 2027 (Staatsblad 2025, 17). Until that date you offset exported electricity against what you take, including energy tax and VAT. After that your energy supplier pays a feed-in payment, and may charge feed-in costs. The rules and the amounts by supplier are in feed-in costs and feed-in payment 2027 and in the table on home battery. What charging on solar power does then is in the end of net metering.

That payment is an arrangement between you and your energy supplier. The company that rents out the panels is not a party on that energy bill, unless your contract says otherwise. Three sets of terms say so in those words. DELTA Energie, general terms of 1 September 2020, art. 15.1: the customer’s own supplier settles generation on the annual bill. Saman Groep, rental terms of May 2022, art. 15.1: the same. Wocozon, solar-power page, read on 13 October 2026: if you export, you receive the feed-in payment from your energy supplier. Dudok Wonen, 2024 terms, art. 5.1: the benefits and costs of use, including when the law changes, sit with the tenant.

Power you use yourself is not part of that payment: you do not buy it, and you pay no energy tax on it. Milieu Centraal, page last changed 8 October 2026, says that from 2027 a tenant has less financial benefit than a homeowner, because most landlords pass the panels on in the rent or the service charge. They also say the costs passed on are probably higher than the bill benefit, and that using power while the sun shines is about four times cheaper than buying it. Those are their statements, not a calculation by this site.

What do the rental and lease terms say?

Only the companies’ own pages, read on 13 October 2026. If an amount is missing, that page does not publish it. A newer contract can differ from a PDF of 2020 or 2022. Your agreement comes before this table.

Company Term Buy-out What its own page says about 2027
DELTA Energie In the contract. PDF of 1 September 2020, still on deltaenergie.nl. Removed at the end, unless you ask the value and buy. Mid-term only in special cases, price on request. Art. 15.1: your supplier settles generation. Terms may follow new law. 1 January 2027 is not named.
Dudok Wonen 20 years, or earlier if the tenancy or the service ends. Not cancellable early. No purchase price. After that the landlord chooses: remove, leave in place, continue, or give use to the tenant. Art. 5.1: benefits and costs, including a change in the law, sit with the tenant. 2027 is not named. Paid through service charges.
Duurzaam Opgewekt No term in the contract: 15 years. Not cancellable early. PDF of 5 September 2024. No purchase price. If you do not return it: residual value. Stopping early can mean a fee plus removal. No text on net metering or 2027.
HalloStroom Not in the readable text. The terms page pointed that day at a PDF address that returned no file. Not published. Homepage: from €39 a month, with no system size. The scheme “is being phased out”. A pointer to a battery or to using power as it is generated.
Saman Groep In the contract. PDF of May 2022, for Duurzame Energie Verhuur B.V. Not linked on zelfstroom.nl that day. The amount in the contract at the end, otherwise removal. Mid-term: a market price on request. CPI indexation. Art. 15.2: the end of net metering is not a ground to dissolve the rental or claim damages. 1 January 2027 is not named.
Wocozon While you live there. Not cancellable. The installation stays when you move. No buy-out on the FAQ. Ends for tenants too on 1 January 2027. Service charges to the association, not to Wocozon. Those charges can change. The Wocozon contract does not.
Zelfstroom Not in the readable text. Not in the readable text. “Phased out from 2027.” The site description mentions buying or renting.

HalloStroom and Zelfstroom write “phased out”. The Act ends net metering in one step, on 1 January 2027. That sentence is not a term and not a buy-out price. At Dudok, the costs of a change in the law stay with the tenant. At Saman Groep, the end of net metering is not a ground to dissolve. At Wocozon, their contract does not change. A change in the service charge comes from the association.

Can you buy the panels out, and does that change the payment?

A buy-out ends the rental if the contract says so, and it makes you the owner of the installation. It does not change who receives the feed-in payment. You already received that, through your energy supplier. After the purchase you no longer pay rent for the panels, and the payment and the feed-in costs remain a matter for your energy contract. Which contract that is, is in which energy contract you choose for 2027.

None of the pages above publishes one purchase amount that fits every installation. DELTA and Saman Groep name a price on request, or the amount already in the contract. Dudok Wonen, Duurzaam Opgewekt, HalloStroom, Wocozon and Zelfstroom publish no buy-out price in the text we could read. Ask for the amount before you sign, and set it next to the rent you would otherwise pay until the term ends. That sum comes from your contract. This table cannot fill it in.

Owning the panels does not raise your ERE per kWh. A separate registration of your own generation can, under stricter conditions, as explained in solar panels at home and ERE.

What does the end of net metering mean for your monthly amount?

From 2027 three amounts run side by side, and they have different senders.

The rent or the service charge. You agree that with the rental company or the housing association. At Wocozon it is a monthly amount to the association, as part of the service charge, for the power from the panels. The association can change that amount. At Saman Groep the rent can rise with the CPI, apart from the energy price. That indexation does not stop because net metering stops.

The energy bill. kWh you use yourself you save in full. Exported kWh earn the payment minus the feed-in costs. Wocozon writes that the amount for export becomes lower, and that you do not have to arrange anything yourself: the supplier adjusts the bill. How high that payment is at your supplier is not copied here. It is listed by supplier in the article on feed-in costs.

ERE, if you charge at home. Renting the panels does not change that payment. A charge point with a built-in MID meter and a connection in your name are the conditions. The amount per kWh and the exceptions are in renting or leasing solar panels and your ERE payment.

Add up three contracts, not one return: the rent that continues, the kWh you use yourself, and the payment your supplier makes for the rest. Only the energy contract can still be switched, within the notice period and any termination fee. The panel rental cannot, where the terms say you cannot cancel early.

Frequently asked questions

Does the rental company receive the feed-in payment?

Not under the law, and not under the terms that mention it. Your energy supplier settles the payment on your contract. You pay the rent or the service charge on top, to the company or to the landlord.

Can you cancel the rental because net metering ends?

Not on the terms we read. Wocozon and Dudok Wonen say the tenant cannot cancel early. Saman Groep writes that a change in the law which ends net metering is not a ground to dissolve the rental or claim damages. Your own contract can differ: read it.

Does rented solar power count for ERE?

Renting or owning the panels does not change the ERE payment for home charging. What counts is the MID meter in the charge point and a connection in your name. The explanation is in the article on renting or leasing solar panels.
