What changes for solar panels on 1 January 2027?

Net metering ends. For power you export you only get a feed-in fee, and most suppliers also charge feed-in costs per kWh. Until 1 January 2030 the law requires that fee to be at least 50% of the bare supply price. On the fixed contracts the Consumentenbond compared on 23 September 2026, you kept 0.25 to 4.1 cents per kWh after costs. Solar power you use yourself saves you the full price including taxes.

Will a home battery pay back after 2027?

On self-use alone, usually not. In the field trial by Vereniging Eigen Huis and CE Delft a € 3,500 battery of 5 kWh had a payback of 10 to 22 years, with a lifetime of 10 to 15 years. Milieu Centraal and the Consumentenbond conclude that the purchase is not profitable for most households right now. On our home battery page you can work it out with your own production, use and prices.

How much more solar power do I use myself with a home battery?

Without a battery you use about 30% of your solar power yourself on average, according to Milieu Centraal. With a well-sized battery that goes to 60 to 70%, according to Vereniging Eigen Huis and CE Delft. In an earlier CE Delft study it went from 25% to 50% with 5 kWh and to 60% with 10 kWh: above about 5 kWh the gain drops quickly.

How big should my home battery be?

Don’t go too big: the battery should cover your evening and night use, says Milieu Centraal. A P1 meter shows how much that is. The Consumentenbond’s rule of thumb is 1 to 1.5 kWh per kWp of solar panels, or 60 to 80% of your daily use.

Is there a subsidy for a home battery, or can I reclaim the VAT?

There is no national subsidy; a few provinces and municipalities have their own scheme, such as Flevoland, Alkmaar and Noord-Beveland. A home battery carries 21% VAT, also when bought together with solar panels. According to the Dutch tax authority you can only reclaim it if you trade power with the battery and so become a VAT entrepreneur, with a dynamic contract and quarterly VAT returns.

Is a dynamic contract a better fit for a home battery?

According to the Consumentenbond a dynamic contract is probably more attractive from 2027 for many households with a home battery, provided the battery charges and discharges automatically on the power price. In the Vereniging Eigen Huis field trial the saving on self-use was actually higher on a fixed contract (€ 350 against € 217 a year), because you pay more per kWh there.

Is a plug-in battery safe?

Milieu Centraal does not recommend plug-in batteries yet and points to fire risk: power can then reach one circuit from two sides without the fuse tripping. The fire service advises a separate circuit in the meter cupboard, never an extension cord or power strip, and at most one battery per circuit. A limit of 800 watts per socket is often mentioned, but we found no Dutch rule that sets it.

Where do I put a home battery, and do I have to register it?

Registering at energieleveren.nl is required by law according to the grid operators, just like for solar panels. There are no separate legal placement rules, only the general rules for electrical installations (Bbl and NEN 1010). The fire service advises a shed, otherwise the garage or attic, never an escape route, with a smoke alarm in the same room and a certified installer. Tell your insurer about the battery too.

Do solar panels or a home battery earn me more ERE?

Usually not. For home charging the national share of renewable power counts, 50.5% in 2026, with or without solar panels or a battery. Only power you generate yourself at the same address, with special guarantees of origin and without subsidy, can count higher. A home battery changes nothing: ERE is about the kWh the MID meter in your charger measures.

Is my electric car an alternative to a home battery?

Yes, for solar power it is. According to Milieu Centraal, charging your car in daytime on your own solar power has about the same effect as a home battery: your self-use goes from about 30% to over 50%. A charger that can charge smartly is all you need. Power back from your car to your home (V2H) is not possible in the Netherlands yet.
